Quentin Tarantino Says "Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” Is His Best Movie
SOURCE - Golden Globe winner Quentin Tarantino has declared “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” as his best movie to date.
During a recent appearance on “The Howard Stern Show,”the legendary director was put on the spot and asked to name his top project.
“For years people used to ask me stuff like that,” the 59-year-old said, according to NME. “And I would say something like, ‘Oh, they’re all my children.’ I really do think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is my best movie.”
The film, released in 2019, stars some of the most famous names in Hollywood, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt, who won an Academy Award for his role.
At least he didn't say Death Proof.
I don't think Tarentino is entirely off base here. Pulp Fiction is his best movie and the one he'll be most remembered for but Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is right there with Jackie Brown for me if you were making a list of his three best. It doesn't have the best screenplay (that's Pulp Fiction) nor does it have the best single scene (opening of Inglourious Basterds) but it's the most beautifully shot movie he's done.
I really love Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The stuff at the Spahn Ranch were among the most suspenseful Tarentino has done. The shots of 1968 Hollywood makes me want jump into the screen and live there. It might have the best soundtrack ever. DiCaprio and Pitt are both likable but not necessarily good people which is a tough combination to pull off. Surrounding all of that is the impending Manson doom that slowly moves in until that great finish. It was my favorite movie in the last great movie year of 2019 (Parasite, 1917, The Irishman are all some of my favorite movies of all-time).
Comparing Tarentino movies is tough because with the exception of Death Proof and The Hateful Eight (which I didn't like but I can at least appreciate), they are all very good to great. I'm sure he's tired of talking about a nearly 30 year old movie like Pulp Fiction. He's now had four of his movies get Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and never won. The greatest director of this generation also has never won a Best Director Oscar either (he's 0 for 4 there too).
He has said repeatedly that he'll make one more movie and then call it quits at least from directing feature films. Before that, he said he'll work on a 8-episode television show that will come out next year and he's currently on tour promoting his second book. He takes so long between movies, I can believe him when he says he is almost done directing. He believes older directors lose their fastball but on the other hand if he feels that his latest movie is his best, maybe that will give him the confidence that he's got a few more movies left in him.
